musing no. 1: reading

June 28, 2008

I’ve realized something interesting. You’ll always find a niche if you read. I mean, with regard to people. You’ll always have friends if you read. People who read like to recommend books they’ve enjoyed. Conversation topic. And they like to share book lists and talk about what books they might want to read. I’ve had many a conversation merely on books, which book we liked best, which book was mere melodramatic nonsense, which book was thought-provoking.

Of course, if you’re a teenager, there’ll be tons of pseudo-intellectuals out there who touch on classic literature and recommend it like crazy. It makes for interesting conversation fodder. I recommend it.

I took the first section of “The Wasteland,” The Burial of the Dead, and I entered it into Wordle to create this text image. Very cool I must say.

clapotis, bien sûr.

June 27, 2008

Ah, the clapotis, of course.

Pattern: Clapotis

Yarn: Cascade 220, approx 550 yards

Needles: Size 8 (5 mm) 24 in. circulars

It’s a deep yellow in real life. I quite like it; it’s warm. I didn’t think it matched my skin exactly when I first made it, but I appreciate it. I like to wear it on the purl side.

Emmeline

June 27, 2008

A blog to call my own. Pictures to call my own of projects to call my own. This is exciting. I apologize for the poor quality of these pictures; it’s prettier in real life, I assure you. When I get a better camera I’ll post better pictures. ’til then. (I’ll use the generic format for posting pictures, bien sûr.)

Pattern: my own; inspiration from various places; named Emmeline

Yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers, approx 450 yds.

Needles: Size 8 (5 mm) 24 in. circulars

The inspiration for this cardigan actually came from the anthropologie-inspired capelet; the pattern provided me with the specific measurements to which I should adhere, i.e. dividing the stitches I had by a certain number and when to do YO increases. I’ve decided that the top-down raglan cardigan is my favorite kind of sweater to knit. So easy, clean, neat. I’m not exactly good at seaming. The somewhat generic lace motif was taken from the “Helena” pattern on knitty. Not much ingenuity went into this pattern except my decision to make the sleeves 1/2-sleeved, so that they end a few inches above the elbows, and to cast off with picot edging on the bottom of the cardigan after the ribbing and also on the edges of the sleeves, after the ribbing.

I name it Emmeline because it’s pretty just like the name.

a new blog for the knitting “blogosphere”

June 16, 2008

So yeah. Here’s my blog. I’m a quirky girl who likes to knit and complain and read. I decided that I should start a blog to chronicle my forays into the craft of knitting with nice photographs and also with some posts that are unrelated to knitting, like simple musings, perhaps, or critical views. Who knows what may come out of this blog.
